Art & Design: Fine Art (Edexcel)
This qualification encourages an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. Students will develop practical skills in drawing, painting and related activities which will enable them to express their own ideas. Students will develop an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice.This will involve studying the work of individual artists and the main movements in art of the twentieth century. Students are required to participate in trips and visits to art galleries to gain first hand experience as much as possible.
Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including GCSE Art or a portfolio of work.
Work Journal
A work journal (sketch book) should be kept as part of each unit of work, containing
drawings, photographs and collected images and written research on artists, analysis of
art work and images.
Course Content
AS Unit 1: Fine Art Coursework
Students develop their understanding of the expressive nature of the formal elements of
art and design, using a wide variety of drawing materials, paint and collage to explore
formal elements such as colour, tone, texture and line.This is a real opportunity to
explore new and traditional materials and techniques at a higher level. This is then
developed into a personal project which is concerned with the relationship of ideas and
art and design practice.Work is based on places, the human condition or relationships
as well as contemporary and historical art works.
AS Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment Timed Exam
This consists of a six week preparatory period and eight hour timed test.
A2 Unit 3: Coursework - Practical Project and Personal Written Study
This unit incorporates two linked elements: practical work and a personal written study. It is essential for both elements that students build on their prior knowledge and experience developed during the course. Practical work aims to provide opportunities for students to pursue their own creative, visual ideas in a chosen area of art, craft and design. Students should develop their practical, creative ideas in the light of their chosen focus.
A2 Unit 4: Externally Set Assignment Timed Exam
This represents the culmination of the course, a six-week preparatory period and a
twelve hour timed test.
