English Language (AQA)

Studying English Language will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment in the use and theory of English. It begins with the study of your own knowledge and experience of language variation and change.You will then widen your understanding of language in historical and cultural contexts.You will develop skills in understanding and analysing how meanings are constructed in spoken and written texts, using linguistic frameworks such as phonology and grammar.

Entry Requirements

Five Grade C passes at GCSE including English Language.

Course Content

AS Unit 1: Seeing Through Language 2 hr written paper exam
Topics covered are audience, purpose, field, mode and genre.You will also learn how children go through the initial phases of language acquisition and how they develop writing skills.

AS Unit 2: Representation and Language Coursework
For language investigation you will be investigating how texts might produce social values and how they might contribute to maintaining or changing values. For language production you will be tasked with producing a genre-based text written to produce or challenge a particular representation of a social group, individual, event or institution.

A2 Unit 3: Language Explorations 2 hr 30 mins written paper exam
A data-based essay on language variation, considering how and why language changes and varies. An analysis task examining how language is used, either spoken or written, to convey ideas and connect with their intended audiences.

A2 Unit 4: Language Investigations and Interventions Coursework
An original piece of language research
