Studying English Literature will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment of Literature through reading widely and critically across centuries, gender and genre. You will experience a range of views about texts and how to read them.You will also develop as an independent reader and critic.

Five Grade C passes at GCSE including English Literature.
Course Content
AS Unit 1: Aspects of Narrative 2 hr exam (open book)
This unit introduces candidates to the central position of narrative in the ways in which literary texts work, involving many different aspects of literary representation. The unit involves the study of four texts - poetry and prose - including at least one modern, post 1990 text.
AS Unit 2: Dramatic Genres Coursework
You will study at least two plays, one of which will be by Shakespeare, and will produce two written pieces.These 1200-1500 word essays will be studies of an aspect of the dramatic/tragic genre with regard to the chosen plays.
A2 Unit 3: Texts and Games 2 hr exam (closed book)
This unit develops ideas on the significance of genre. It is likely that over the next few years Elements of the Gothic will be studied for this paper. A minimum of three texts will be studied across the three genres of poetry, prose and drama.
A2 Unit 4: Further and Independent Reading Coursework
Three texts will be studied. The first written piece will be a comparative study of two texts (1500-2000 words) of the candidates' choice.The third text will be a pre-released anthology of critical writing. Candidates will apply an aspect of this anthology to a literary text.
