Film Studies (Welsh Board)
Studying film will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment of this subject through the study of a wide variety of different film types.You will develop analytical and critical skills by viewing films, conducting personal research and learning how to write screenplays and produce short films.
Entry Requirements
Students should have gained five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language.
Course Content
AS Unit 1: Exploring Film Form Assessment: An analysis of film extracts
1500 words. A creative piece of work (film clip or storyboard with an evaluation)
This unit focuses on the micro features of film: mise en scene, performance, cinematography, editing and sound. You will learn to identify how these construct meaning and contribute to the sensory experience of the film.You will also reflect on the relationship between the film and the viewer. There is an opportunity to make a clip of a film or, using digital photography, to create a storyboard.
AS Unit 2: British and American Film 2 hr exam using case studies
This unit focuses on two key aspects of film studies
- Producers and audiences
- Narrative and genre
The second year will develop a sophisticated analytical and critical approach to understanding how film constructs meaning and provokes diverse interpretations.
A2 Unit 3: Film Research and Creative Projects
a) The small scale research project.You will research a topic in cinema based upon one
chosen film, which forms the substance of a seminar paper. 40%
b)You will shoot a 4 minute piece of film or script a piece of film. 60%
A2 Unit 4:Varieties of Film Experience - Issues and Debates 2 hr 45min exam
a)World Cinema (35%)
1. Aspects of National Cinema. Choose one of the following:
Bollywood; Iranian Cinema; Japanese Cinema; Mexican Cinema
2. International Film Styles. Choose one:
German and/or Soviet Cinema; Surrealism; Neo Realism; New Waves
3. Specialist Study. Choose one: Urban stories or Women
b) Spectator topics. (35%) Choose one:
Early Cinema; Documentary; Experimental; Popular cinema
c) Single film (30%) - critical study of a film chosen from a list
