ICT (WJEC)

Students who study Human Biology A level will gain insight into much more than just how the body works! Lots of interesting research is taking place in the field of medicine, genetics and biotechnology.The course will introduce many aspects of medical research, including the treatment of disease, Gene genomes and cloning. The career possibilities are wide ranging from Sports and Leisure to Medical Sales, Medical training, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy. Most students go on to study in Higher Education where the choice of degree options gives plenty of scope for employment.

Entry Requirements

Students should have gained five GCSEs at grade C or above, one of which should be ICT/Computing.

Course Content

Year 1 - AS (2 units)
IT1: Information Systems (2 hours 15 minutes exam)

Part 1:You will learn about how ICT is used in business processes today, by investigating:
• The relationship between data, information and knowledge
• The value and importance of information
• How information can improve the quality of decision-making.
• The data validation and verification processes
• The advantages of ICT over manual methods of processing data
• Network environments
• Human Computer Interface
• Social Issues of ICT
• Database Systems
• Use of ICT in Business, Education, Health and Home

Part 2: You will be required to prepare a spreadsheet solution on a specific topic.

IT2: Presenting Information Task (coursework portfolio)
In this project, you will create a collection of documents using a variety of application
software such as:
• Word processing software
• Database software
• Web authoring software

Year 2 - A Level (2 units)

IT3: Use and Impact of ICT (2 hours 30 minutes exam)

Part 1: You will recommend a network environment that covers hardware and software for a company by reviewing the different types of networks available today, look at the different types of network technologies and identify how they communicate with each other. You will investigate the different ways of working with technology such as Teleworking and Video-conferencing, and review legal and moral ICT issues, and how security impacts on eBusiness.

Part 2:You will explore how organisations use Management Information Systems and review the tools required for the management of change such as System Development Life Cycle.

IT4: Database Project (coursework project)
You will create a database for a local business following the System Development methods covered in IT3: Use and Impact of ICT.
