Law (AQA)

Studying Law will enable you to develop your interest and enjoyment of this subject through the study of challenging areas of law.You will develop analytical skills by tackling case studies.The aim is to relate as far as possible to everyday situations.

Entry Requirements

Students should have gained 7 GCSEs at Grade 'C' or above including English Language or Literature at 'B' or above.

Course Content

AS Units 1: Law Making and the Legal System 1 hr 30 mins exam
Section A: Law Making.
Parliamentary law making; Delegated legislation; Statutory interpretation; Judicial precedent.
Section B: The Legal System.
The civil courts and other forms of dispute resolution;The criminal courts and lay people;The legal profession and other sources of advice and funding;The judiciary.

AS Units 2: The Concepts of Liability 1 hr 30 mins exam
Section A: Introduction to Criminal Liability.
Underlying principles of criminal liability;The courts: procedure and sentencing.
Section B: Introduction to Tort.
Liability in negligence; The courts: procedure and damages OR
Section C: Introduction to Contract
Formation of contract; Breach of contract;The courts: procedure and damages

A2 Units 3: Criminal Law or Contract Law 1 hr 30 mins exam
Section A: Criminal Law (fatal and non-fatal offences against the person).
Murder; Voluntary manslaughter; Involuntary manslaughter; Non-fatal offences against the person; Defences; Evaluation.
Section B: Contract.
Formation; Contract terms;Vitiating factors; Discharges of contract; Remedies; Evaluation

A2 Units 4: Criminal law or Tort and Concepts of Law 2 hr exam
Section A: Criminal law (offences against property).
Theft and robbery; Burglary; Blackmail; Fraud; Making off without payment; Criminal damage; Defences
Section B: Law or Tort.
Negligence; Occupiers' liability; Nuisance and escape of dangerous things; Vicarious liability; Defences; Remedies.
Section C: Concepts of Law.
Law and morals; Law and justice; Judicial creativity; Fault; Balancing conflicting interests.
