Mathematics (Edexcel)
Maths is a challenging but interesting and rewarding subject to study at A level. If you want to be successful you must be prepared to work hard and devote a considerable amount of time to your study but the work can be very enjoyable. Maths is highly regarded by many employers. It is an essential requirement for entry on to university courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering and Physics and is highly desirable for courses in Computer Science, Pure and Applied Sciences, Economics, Business Studies and Accounting.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSE at grade C or above, including GCSE Maths Grade B or above.
Course Content
AS
Two compulsory units:
Core Mathematics 1 1 hr 30 mins exam
Core Mathematics 2 1 hr 30 mins exam
These two units cover algebra, functions, co-ordinate geometry, sequences and series, calculus and trigonometry.
One other unit chosen (by the tutor) from:
Statistics 1 1 hr 30 mins exam
Covers modelling, representing and summarising data, measures of location and dispersion, correlation and regression, probability, discrete random variables and the normal distribution
Decision Maths 1 1 hr 30 mins exam
Covers algorithms, applications of graph theory, critical path analysis and linear programming.
Mechanics 1 1 hr 30 mins exam
Covers modelling, dynamics and kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line, statics of a particle, moments and vectors.
A2
Two compulsory units, Core Mathematics 3 and Core Mathematics 4 and one other unit from Statistics, Decision Maths or Mechanics. Each unit has a 1 hour 30 mins exam.
