Spanish (Edexcel)

This class caters for students who have achieved a grade C or above at GCSE in Spanish. The course encourages student to further their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as study aspects of life and culture in the countries where Spanish is spoken.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSE at C or above, including GCSE Spanish (higher level) or equivalent.

Course Content

Students will study aspects of modern life in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries. In the AS year we encourage students to develop listening and speaking skills.The various class activities offer students the opportunity to gain confidence in these areas. Students will be able to work on topics of their own choice during class and also at home. Students will need to broaden their vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to consolidate their understanding of the language through structured exercises and tasks.
Visits to Spanish-speaking countries are encouraged as well as individual research for the oral presentation.

These are four general topic areas:
• Youth culture and concerns
• Lifestyle: health and fitness

Unit 1: Speaking 8-10 min exam
This unit rewards students for their ability to converse in the target language on a general topic area they have chosen in advance.

Unit 2: Listening, Reading and Writing 2 hr 30 mins exam
This unit requires students to recognise and use the target language in a variety of contexts and in relation to a prescribed range of general topic areas.

Section A: Listening: Students will be required to listen to a range of authentic recorded materials and to retrieve and convey information given in the recording by responding to a range of target-language questions.

Section B: Reading: Students will be required to read authentic printed materials to retrieve and convey information by responding to a range of questions.

Section C: Writing: Students will be required to write 200-220 words in the form of a letter, report or article in the target language based on a short printed stimulus.

Progression/Next Step:
The A2 year builds on the same skills, but more emphasis is put on written work, with two written assessment units. Study of a region, film or literature is required for the topic and texts essay.There is also the speaking element in which you choose a topic to discuss relating to either day-to-day matters, society and the working world, the environment, citizenship or the international context.
