Science – Core GCSE
This award is a Single Award in GCSE Science and makes up the new GCSE in Core Science, it also allows progression to make it up to a double award at any later date.
This new structure for the GCSE Science emphasises the practical and investigation skills needed in science. There are 3 written papers and coursework that will contribute to the final qualifications.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at least grade D, with a minimum EE at Double Award, as well as previous experience in science, or a keen interest and motivation to learn. Students without formal qualifications may apply through diagnostic tests.
Course Content
Unit 1: B1 – Biology
This unit covers the Biology part of the course and covers the following topics: how humans respond to changes; what we can do to keep healthy; what causes disease and how to defend our bodies; genetics; evolution; environmental Biology.
Unit 2: C1 – Chemistry
This unit covers the Chemistry section, topics include: how rocks provide building materials; extraction and uses of metals; fuels and crude oil; polymers; earth and the atmosphere; use of plant oils.
Unit 3: P1 – Physics
This unit covers the Physics sections, topics include: electricity and electrical devices; generating electricity; waves and electro magnetic spectrum; radioactivity; the universe and our solar system; heat transfer.
Method of Assessment
Science Centre – Assessed unit which consists of an investigative skills assignment (an externally set, internally assessed test taking 45 minutes) and practical skills assessment.
