Science – GCSE Core & Additional
This award provides the nearest equivalent to the previous GCSE Science Double Award. You can obtain two GCSE Passes, one in core science and one in additional Science.
The emphasis on the first half of the course will be on evaluating evidence and the implications of science for society. The second part of the specifications have a greater emphasis on explaining, theorising and modelling in science.
Courses based on this specification form a firm basis for level 3 courses in the sciences such as AS and A level Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at least grade D, one of which must be Science, as well as previous experience in science or a keen interest and motivation to learn. Students without formal qualifications may apply through diagnostic tests.
Course Content
Unit 1: Biology
Biology comprises of two units in which the following are studied:-
- Human beings
- Healthy humans
- Diseases
- Different individuals within the same species
- Extinction of plants and animals
- What are plants and animals built from
- Enzymes and their functions
- Inheritance
Unit 2: Chemistry
Chemistry comprises of two units in which the following are studied:-
- Rocks and metals
- Fuel and crude oil
- Plant oils
- Polymers and ethanol
- Sub-atomic particles
- Rates of chemical reactions and energy
- Ions in solutions
Unit 3: Physics
Physics comprises of two units in which the following are studied:-
- Heat transfer
- Efficiency
- Electricity and its uses
- Electro magnetic spectrum
- Radioactivity and nuclear reactors
- Origins of the universe
- Force and motion
- Momentum
Method of Assessment
Each module will be externally assessed by a written paper lasting 45 minutes.
Science Centre – Assessed unit which consists of an investigative skills assignment (an externally set, internally assessed test taking 45 minutes) and practical skills assessment (a holistic skills assessment).
