Child Development - GCSE
A GCSE in Child Development is a nationally recognised qualification. The GCSE in Child |Development will help to provide a route into further education or employment.
The GCSE in Child Development provides an introduction to careers in the Early Years sector, such as an Early years worker; classroom assistant; teacher; social worker or nurse.
If you wish to continue your studies you may chose to progress to the BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care Learning and Development or the Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at least grade D. Some previous experience in Early Years would be desirable as well as a motivation to learn. Students without formal qualifications may apply through diagnostic assessment.
Course Content
Unit 1 Child Development Short Tasks
The work this unit will be set by the examining body. You will be expected to demonstrate a range of practical skills and knowledge within the Early Years sector.
Unit 2 Child Study Task
You will be required to carry out a child study on one child aged between
0-5 years. The subject of the task will be set by the examining body.
Unit 3 Principles of Child Development
You will undertake a detailed study of the key principles of child development. This will include an investigation into the family and parenting; preparation for pregnancy and birth; aspects of child development; nutrition and health and community support.
Method of Assessment
Throughout the course you will complete a number of assignments.
Unit 1 will be assessed through 3 short tasks; each will have a total of 7 hours attached to them. Unit 2 will be assessed through a child study and Unit 3 will be assessed through a 1.5 hour written examination.
