English Literature GCSE
The GCSE English Literature course is designed to increase understanding and enjoyment of a wide range of literature. Plays, novels, short stories and poems are studied during the course, including texts written before 1900.
Students who achieve a grade C or higher, may progress to study English Literature at AS level following a short interview.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSE’s at least Grade D as well as previous experience in English Literature or a keen interest and motivation to learn. Students without formal qualifications may apply through diagnostic assessment. Students whose first language is not English may need an interview.
Course Content
The course runs from September to June and the coursework texts are studied during the first term.
From January onwards class time is devoted to the study of the three examination texts.
Method of Assessment
Assessment comprises of 30% coursework and 70% examination.
Coursework is made up of three responses to texts (play, prose and poetry) and there are three essay questions on different texts in the examination, which lasts for 2.5 hours.
