English For Speakers Of Other Languages (ESOL)
Level 1 & Level 2 – (City & Guilds Qualification)
ESOL Level 1 and Level 2 are designed to help students whose first language is not English to reach upper intermediate (Level 1) or advanced level (Level 2) in English.
Both levels focus on developing students’ accuracy, fluency and understanding of English in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The aim is to help students to become more functional in a range of situations, for example, in employment, in a variety of social contexts and in further education.
Entry Requirements
Everyone will undergo a diagnostic assessment to determine their level. All students must demonstrate that they are working towards Level 1 in English in all four skills.
Course Content
Writing mode: will focus mainly on writing reports, newspaper articles, formal/informal letters, reviews and personal pieces of writing.
Writing assessment: this will include formal written exams throughout the year as well as individual ongoing targets.
Reading mode: will help students to develop a range of reading skills, which include: reading for gist, in detail as well as skimming and scanning for information. Students will also be exposed to a wide range of texts, for example, newspaper articles, fiction, reports and websites.
Reading assessment: will be an online or paper based test consisting of 40 questions - testing a range of reading skills on different genres/texts. Students will also need to complete individual ongoing targets.
Speaking and Listening mode: will include work on discussions, role-plays, telephone skills, class presentations, listening to a range of media (i.e. TV and radio), following oral instructions as well as learning about the importance of body language in communication.
Speaking and Listening assessment: students will need to engage in a discussion with fellow students, deliver a class presentation/explanation and role-play a telephone conversation (all under strict exam conditions) as well as complete individual ongoing targets.
Method of Assessment
Students are assessed through a coursework portfolio.
There is no examination attached to this course.
