BTEC First Certificate in Health & Social Care
The BTEC First Certificate in Health & Social Care is designed to equip individuals, and develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required at an operational level in the care sector. Students will consider the role of the care worker, their relationship with service users and their responsibilities towards service users and the wider care sector.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at least grade D or above, BTEC Introductory Diploma, as well as experience in Health & Social Care and a keen interest and motivation to learn. Students without formal qualifications may apply through diagnostic assessment.
Course Content
The course is made up of 4 units:
Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors
Understanding the everyday needs of individuals in term of, personal safety, physiological and social needs, is fundamental to the study of health and social care. It is important also to appreciate some of the factors that can result in these needs not being fully met, and the effects this can have on the health of individuals. Health and social care workers need to have a good understanding of these concepts in order to be able to work with and support service users.
Ensuring Safe Environments in Health and Social Care
It is essential that students have a knowledge and understanding of health, safety and security issues in the health and social care workplace. This unit will encourage them to reflect on potential hazards and how the risk from these may be reduced, also to explore relevant legislation and guidelines and how these may help to promote a safer working environment, and examine the policies and procedures of specific organisations
Human Lifespan Development
Knowledge of development thought the life stages is important for learners who are considering careers in health and social care because it will assist their understanding of the differing needs of individuals, including care needs. It will also help them understand the influence of unexpected life events on service users. Learners are encouraged to be reflective during the study of this topic and to relate theoretical study to life experiences.
Health and Social Care Services
It is useful for students who are considering a career in health or social care to understand how these services are provided and gain insight of the benefits that working in partnership can bring to service delivery. It is also important for students to have the opportunity to explore career possibilities in the health and social care sectors, and the requirements of different job roles.
Method of Assessment
Each unit is assessed through a variety of assignments which are graded to pass, merit, or distinction.
Progression.
Students who successfully complete this qualification can progress onto the A Level programme in Health & Social Care if they have the equivalent to 4 or more grade 'C' at GCSE or into employment within the sector.
