Maths - GCSE
The course is offered at the Foundation and Higher Tiers. The highest grade available on Foundation Tier is grade C. GCSE Maths grade C is an entry requirement for many courses at level 3 and level 4. It is also a very useful, and in some cases essential, qualification for many careers such as Engineering, Computing and Business.
A minimum of grade C at the Higher Tier is required to study AS level Maths.
Entry Requirements
Foundation Tier - a Grade D or equivalent obtained previously, or a minimum mark of 18 out of 25 in the College initial assessment.
Higher Tier – a minimum mark of 23 out of 25 in the College initial assessment and a successful interview with a Maths tutor.
Course Content
The GCSE Maths programme for Foundation and Higher Tiers entails the study of the following four subject areas:
- Number Work
- Statistics
- Algebra
- Geometry
Method of Assessment
There will be internal assessment throughout the year consisting of 12 assignments and two mock exams. These will be used to monitor student progress and to ensure that each student is on the correct Tier. The external assessment for both Tiers consists of two written papers each accounting for 50% of the assessment.
Foundation Tier has one calculator and one non calculator paper, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes
Higher Tier: one calculator and one non calculator paper, each lasting
1 hour 45 minutes.
