Diploma in Horticulture (QCF) Level 3 - (Horticulture Level 3 Diploma)
An advanced programme for people either working in the Industry or wanting to enter the Industry. The programme gives specialist options to be considered and can be studied full or part time.
Entry Requirements
Normally a L2 qualification in Horticulture or appropriate work experience that demonstrates a good knowledge of horticultural practices and principles.
Course Content
To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture learners are required to achieve 120 credits in total; 40 credits from the mandatory units shown below, and the remaining 80 credits is made up of a combination of specialist units also shown in the table below.
Mandatory Units
- Unit 301 - Understand the Principles of Plant Science = 5 credits
- Unit 351 - Understand the Principles of Soil Science = 5 credits
- Unit 302 - Undertake and Review Work Experience in the Land-based Industries = 10 credits
- Unit 303 - Undertake an Investigative Project in the Land-based Sector = 10 credits
- Unit 304 - Business Management in the Land-based Sector = 10 credits
Specialist Units
- Unit 318 - Establish and Manage Exterior Plant Displays = 10 credits
- Unit 320 - Understand Historical Influences on the development of Gardens = 10 credits
- Unit 322 - Undertake Identification, Selection and Use of Ornamental Plants = 10 credits
- Unit 323 - Maintain Turf in Parks and Gardens = 10 credits
- Unit 327 - Construct Horizontal Landscape Surfaces = 10 credits
- Unit 329 - Prepare Landscape and Garden Design Briefs = 10 credits
- Unit 330 - Understand the Principles and Practices of Landscape and Garden Design = 10 credits
- Unit 347 - Undertake Tree and Shrub Pruning and Maintenance = 10 credits
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is ongoing with practical and written assignments to be achieved.
What can I do next?
On completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture learners may progress into employment or onto the following qualifications:
- Level 4 and above centre-based qualifications in Horticulture.
- Level 3 or 4 qualifications in Work-based Horticulture.
- Foundation degree.
