BTEC Diploma in Land-based Studies L1 - (Horticulture EdExcel BTEC Level 1 Diploma)
This is a one year course studied over three days per week based at the Cedars Horticultural Centre.
It is an exciting programme which enables you to gain a clear understanding and some experience of horticulture and at the same time improve your functional skills.
The course has a strong practical horticultural focus and you are expected to study Maths, English and Personal, Social Development at the appropriate level.
Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications are required.
You will be invited to attend an interview (informal) and undertake an initial assessment in Basic Skills. It is also essential to demonstrate a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

This course consists of 12 units:

- Plant Flower Bulbs for Naturalisation or Bedding
- Pruning Trees and Shrubs
- Ground Preparation
- Health and Safety of Self and Others in the Workplace
- Maintenance of Equipment
- Maintenance of Grass surfaces
- Planting and Establishing Plants
- Maintaining Plants
- Prepare and Plant a Container for Display
- Planting and Staking a Tree
- Working in a Team

You will be assessed using a variety of methods including:
- Practical assessment
- Written assignments
- Observed assessments
- Portfolio of evidence
What can I do next?
After successfully completing this course you can progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture or find employment as a Gardener/ Landscaper.
