Diploma in Horticulture (QCF) L2 - (Horticulture BTEC Edexcel Level 2 Diploma)
This is a one year full-time course studied over threee days per week based at the Cedars Horticultural Centre. It is an ideal course for school leavers or mature students wishing to develop their Horticultural knowledge.
The course covers many aspects of the maintenance and creation of amenity spaces, such as parks, gardens, public green spaces and conservation habitats and is ideal if you want to follow a career in landscaping, gardening or related horticulture areas. There is a strong focus on the practical skills needed to work in amenity horticulture with this qualification giving you the underpinning knowledge.
As part of the Level 2 Diploma you will also have the opportunity to gain direct experience of the Industry through work placements within the horticultural sector.
Entry Requirements
The qualification provides a natural progression from the Horticulture Level 1 Diploma or is suited to full-time students with 4 GCSEs at grade D or above. You will need to demonstrate a strong interest in Horticulture or Landscaping and a desire to put your training into practice. You will also be asked to attend a short informal interview and undertake an initial assessment in Basic Skills.
Course Content
This course consists of two mandatory units and five optional units.
Mandatory units:
- Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries
- Establish and Maintain Plants Outdoors
Optional units:
- Understand the Basic Principles of Plant Science
- Understand the Basic Principles of Soil Science
- Participate in Providing Estate Maintenance
- Construct Landscape Foundations and Surfaces
- Understand the Principles of Sports and Amenity Turf Maintenance
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed using a variety of methods including:
- practical assessment
- written assessment
- written assignments
Assessments are structured seasonally through Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer work
What can I do next?
After successfully completing this courses you can progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture or a Level 3 Apprenticeship. Many students also progress into employment as a gardener, landscaper, plant nursery worker, grounds-person or park ranger working in gardens, parks, sports pitches, conservation and country parks, plant nurseries, garden centre’s or landscaping.
