Around and About

Around & About

... a garden designed by Helen Wood and Darren Rudge, lecturers at the Cedars Horticultural Centre, highlighting the environmental and economic improvement of the Black Country for people, plants and bio-diversity. It provides a practical solution that is sustainable for our urban planted environment.

Cited by the Royal Horticultural Society as one of the top three garden designs they have received for this years show, it has been awarded a Bronze medal by the judges.

A new wave naturalistic planting style is going to be incorporated throughout the garden, with the plants being chosen for their suitability to the site with their inter-relationships reducing the need for intensive maintenance, and creating habitats. Based on an urban traffic island the garden portrays a sustainable environment for local biodiversity and provides a practical solution to urban planting..

Initial design by Darren Rudge and Helen Wood for this years garden

At the 1999 BBC show Cedars students helped construct the 'Dragon Makers Yard', which won a silver gilt medal.

In 2000 they produced a garden that gave a vision of the future as it could be if people do not heed the environmental concerns of today (the BIOME), both the BIOME and last year's garden MultipliCity were awarded prestigious Silver Medals by the Royal Horticultural Society.

All 3 gardens featured in the BBC programme Gardeners World.
