Nineteen–year–old Leesha Memmi is setting sail for a new career as a stylist on a luxury cruise liner after completing her hairdressing qualifications at the Metro One campus.
“My skills really developed over the three years and the tutors supported me every step of the way.
“I couldn't believe it when I was offered my new job. I wouldn't have had this opportunity if I hadn't come to college and know that the skills and experience I gained on the course definitely helped me to get it – I'm really proud that all my hard work paid off."
An apprentice from City of Wolverhampton College showed off his flair for hair when he scooped third place in a top hairdressing competition.
Matthew Wilson, aged 21, who works at The Coach House salon in Tettenhall while attending college for day release, scooped third place in the West Midlands heats of the WorldSkills UK Competition at Stoke College on June 11. As part of the competition he had just four and a half hours to show off his cut, colour and finish skills on a mannequin in front of a team of judges.
Programme Coordinator Sue Cole said: “It takes a great deal of time and dedication to prepare for a hairdressing competition such as this, and I am delighted that Matthew has done so well and that his talent has shone through.
“A huge thanks must go to Allyson Clewlow, who runs the salon with husband Steve, who has supported and prepared Matthew for the event.” Matthew is now hoping he has done enough to make it through to the National Finals, which take place at The Skills Show from 13 – 15 November, 2014, where the competitors will be aiming to win Gold, Silver and Bronze in front of an audience of over 80,000.
WorldSkills UK inspires young people and adults to be ambitious in their pursuit of skills to the highest level.
