
A Level Programmes – Level 3
The A level programme is the traditional, nationally recognised, UK method of study taken for two years in order to gain the relevant qualifications to study Foundation Degrees and Undergraduate Degrees at Higher Education level. We aim to offer you the subject combination that best suits your plans for Higher Education and your future career. You can mix subjects from the list below and will need to choose 4 subjects when applying for your first year of study. If you are unsure of all your subjects, we are happy to offer guidance by discussing your career plans and advising you of the most appropriate subjects to study, in order that you meet the requirements for entry into Higher Education, upon completion of your 2 year A level programme.
Entry Requirements
You will need to hold the equivalent of a UK level 2 qualification in order to meet the entry requirements to gain a place to study on A level programmes. The College will assess your qualifications and tell you whether you are eligible to join the course.You will need to complete the application form and write 250 words on the back page of the form explaining why you want to undertake the subjects you have chosen.
History (AQA)
History involves the study of concepts, cause and effect and continuity and change. It requires the development of the skills of research, analysis and problem solving.
Human Biology (OCR)
Students who study Human Biology A level will gain insight into much more than just how the body works! Lots of interesting
research is taking place in the field of medicine, genetics and biotechnology. The course will introduce many aspects of medical
research, including the treatment of disease. Gene genomes and cloning are all included. The career possibilities are wide ranging
from Sports and Leisure to Medical Sales, Medical training, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy. Most students go on to study in Higher
Education where the choice of degree options gives plenty of scope for employment.
Applied ICT (OCR)
The GCE AS and A2 in Applied ICT are designed to: Introduce students to work related application skills; Provide technical knowledge, skills and understanding associated with Information and Computing Technology; Equip learners with some of the skills they will need in employment or in further education and training.
Italian (Edexcel)
This class caters for students who have previously studied and undertaken examinations in Italian. The course encourages students to further their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as study aspects of life and culture in Italy and other parts of the world where Italian is spoken.
Law (AQA)
Studying Law will enable you to develop your interest and enjoyment of this subject through the study of challenging areas of law. You will develop analytical skills by tackling case studies. The aim is to relate as far as possible to everyday situations.
Leisure Studies (Edexcel)
The leisure industry is often referred to as the fastest growing industry in the world. For A Level students this is the alternative to
A Level Physical Education. You will learn about the scope of the leisure industry and apply your learning to projects of your
choice. You will organise and evaluate a sports event. As part of the course you will have access to the sports and fitness centres
at the Wellington Road campus.
Mathematics (Edexcel)
Maths is a challenging but interesting and rewarding subject to study at A level. If you want to be successful you must be prepared
to work hard but the work can very enjoyable.Maths is highly regarded by many employers. It is an essential requirement for entry
on to courses at Universities in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering and Physics and highly desirable for courses such as Computer
Science, Pure and Applied Sciences, Economics and some Business degrees.
Media Studies (AQA)
This course develops your understanding of the ways in which the media work. You will study television programmes, films, advertising, popular music and newspapers and the impact of new media technologies including the Internet. You will study the ways in which the media industry works and how audiences receive and use the media products.
BTEC National Certificate in Applied Science (Medical Science)
Medical science is the use of scientific methods to assist in the diagnosis and analysis of various medical conditions and research
into new methods and treatments.This full-time two year qualification combines written theory with the practical skills required for
working within the field of medical science, research and higher studies whether that is at a hospital or in the laboratory. It is
equivalent to 2 A-Levels, with classes scheduled throughout the week, and for suitable students can be combined with an additional
AS-Level. Successful completion of the course can lead students onto university courses to study various medical sciences or other
qualifications within analytical science.
Physics (Edexcel)
Physics is arguably the most exciting part of all science and technology. It explains everything from quarks to quasars, bosons to
black holes and deals with both living and inanimate systems. Physics is playing an important part in the development of
telecommunications, medical diagnosis, laser surgery, aircraft design and in countless other applications, both in industry and the
home.An understanding of the concepts of Physics leads some way to understanding the nature of life itself. Physics is the ‘glue’
which holds the sciences together. The course has a high practical content and students are expected to carry out weekly
investigations and report upon them. We are continually increasing the amount of computer interfacing in the laboratory. Lectures
are backed up by demonstrations, computer simulations and interactive programmes.
Psychology (Edexcel)
Psychology is about the study of human - and to some extent animal - behaviour. The discipline contains many schools of thought that have different approaches to what-it-is-to-be-human. For example, at the social level you will learn that our behaviour is influenced by others. At the biological level, conditions such as schizophrenia may be caused by excessive chemical activity in the brain. Psychology is a science and you will be expected to develop your statistical and mathematical skills. You will also be expected to participate in and conduct experiments and research.
Sociology (AQA)
Sociology involves a rigorous study of a variety of sociological perspectives, and develops the ability to evaluate critically. Sociology is a useful background for study social sciences, law and the humanities. You may progress into social work, careers in the health services, advertising and marketing, the media, the police and the legal profession.
Spanish (Edexcel)
This class caters for students who have previously undertaken examinations in Spanish. The course encourages students to further their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as study aspects of life and culture in Spain and Latin America.
Accounting AQA
The Accounting syllabus is designed to enable you to develop a sound understanding of accounting procedures and an appreciation of the role of accounting in a Society. It will develop your knowledge and understanding of the purpose of accounting concepts and techniques. You will develop skills of analysis and evaluation of accounting information.
Art and Design: Fine Art (Edexcel)
This qualification encourages an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. Students will develop practical skills indrawing, painting and related activities which will enable them to express their own ideas. Students will develop an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice. This will involve studying the work of individual artists and the main movements in art of the twentieth century. Students are required to participate in trips and visits to art galleries to gain first hand experience as much as possible.
Biology (OCR)
So many new discoveries are being made in the field of Biology that the subject at A level gives students an insight into the latest technology. The course is up-to-the minute and packed with a wide range of information, ranging from molecules to man. Students, who are interested in animals and plants, as well as the human body, will be suited to this subject.
Business Studies (AQA)
This subject provides an integrated study of the main areas of business – Marketing, Human Resource Management, Finance and Economics. You will study marketing objectives, market analysis, strategy, planning, finance as an aid to decision making and financial control, management theories in relation to motivation and leadership, management and organisational structures, operations management, employer/employee relations, human resource management, ratio analysis and much more! You will develop skills in analysis and evaluation of case studies.
Chemistry (AQA)
Chemistry has immediate relevance to many careers including those in Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Dentistry,Biochemistry, etc. Chemistry is also a subject which blends in well with other subjects such as Biology and Physics.The course aims to recognise the value of Chemistry to society and how it may be used responsibly, to develop skills in laboratory procedures and techniques, and to lay a secure foundation for those who wish to continue their studies.
Economics (AQA)
The course will develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories which will be used to analyse current issues and problems. The course aims to provide a critical understanding of the operation of the United Kingdom’s economy operating in a European and world context. It will analyse the role of markets and the government in providing goods and services.English Language (AQA)
Studying English Language will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment in the use and theory of English. It begins with the study of your own knowledge and experience of language variation and change. You will then widen your understanding of language in historical and cultural contexts. You will develop skills in understanding and analysing how meanings are constructed in spoken and written texts, using linguistic frameworks such as phonology and grammar.
English Literature:AS/A2 AQA (B)
Studying English Literature will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment of Literature through reading widely and critically across centuries, gender and genre. You will experience a range of views about texts and how to read them. You will also develop as an independent reader and critic.Film Studies (Welsh Board)
Studying film will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment of this subject through the study of a wide variety of different film types. You will develop analytical and critical skills by viewing films, conducting personal research and learning how to write screenplays and produce short films.FM1 Exploring Film Form
This unit focuses on the micro features of film: mise en scene, performance, cinematography, editing and sound. You will learn to identify how these construct meaning and contribute to the sensory experience of the film.You will also reflect on the relationship between the film and the viewer. There is an opportunity to make a clip of a film or, using digital photography, to create a storyboard.
BTEC National Certificate in Applied Science (Forensic Science)
Forensic science is the use of scientific methods to assist the police and the courts in resolving legal issues, whether those issues
are criminal or civil.This full-time two year qualification combines written theory with the practical skills required for working
within the field of forensic science, whether that is at a crime scene or in the laboratory. It is equivalent to 2 A-Levels, with classes
scheduled throughout the week, and for suitable students can be combined with an additional A-Level. Successful completion of the
course can lead students onto university courses to study forensic science or other qualifications within analytical science or
bioscience fields.
French (Edexcel)
This class caters for students who have previously studied and undertaken examinations in French. The course encourages students to further their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as study aspects of life and culture in the countries where French is spoken.
Geography (AQA)
Geography examines the issues of changes in our human and physical environment. You will study how the past can affect the present and how the present may affect the future. We examine change on a range of scales from local and national, to international and global. You will acquire a broad range of skills that equip you well for University study and employment.
German (Edexcel)
This class caters for students who have previously studied and undertaken examinations in German.The course encourages students to further their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as study aspects of life and culture in the countries where German is spoken.
Government and Politics
(Edexcel 8GP01)
Students learn about the institutions which form Parliamentary government in the UK, with reference to devolution and the European Union. Electoral systems, the constitution, political parties and pressure groups will also be studied. The subject fits well with History, English, Law, Sociology and Media Studies. Students go on to university or varied employment fields.
How will I be assessed?
Subjects can either be part examination and part assignment based, or all examination or assignment based. The amount of assignments and examinations are different for each subject and dependant on which subjects you decide to study. In order to progress onto the second year of your A levels (A2’s), you will need to pass your first year of A levels. Upon successful completion of your second year, you may then progress onto a Higher Education programme and study for a further two years on a Foundation Degree or a further three to four year on an Undergraduate Degree related to your career choice.
Additional Costs
College libraries stock a range of books related to your course of which you can take out on loan free of charge. You may wish to purchase your own books at a cost of approximately £20-£30 per book.You may be required to go on educational visits/field trips as part of your course and this may cost you approximately £250 across both years of your A level studies.
