Art and Design – Diploma in Foundation
Studies - Level 3/4
This programme aims to build on and extend skills, knowledge and understanding of Art and Design. It is intended to be a diagnostic programme allowing students to be able to choose a career pathway in Art and design that reflects their particular aptitude and skills with confidence. The course is a one year, intensive programme which will provide you with the necessary skills to progress onto a higher-education Foundation or Undergraduate Degree.
Entry Requirements
You will need to hold the equivalent of a UK level 2 qualification and have at least one qualification above this level or have evidence of prior study at an advanced level, and have an interest, or experience in the Art and Design sector. The College will assess your qualifications and tell you whether you are eligible to join the course. You will need to complete the application and write 250 words on the back page of the form explaining why you want to undertaken your chosen course. You will also be asked to provide a portfolio of recent work demonstrating your ability; this may be via an e-portfolio of digital photographs if necessary. In exceptional circumstances, and dependant on the experience of the applicant, entry may be gained solely on portfolio but at the discretion of the course team.Course Content
This is a one year, full time intensive course. It is structured around the core elements of:
- Visual language
- Research skills
- Business/professional practice
Plus optional elements including Fine Art, Sculpture, Fashion/Textiles amongst others.
The first term is focussed on a broad base of skills and techniques including subjects such as photography, contextual studies and textiles. In the second term, learners focus on an area of specialism to develop highly personal and advanced work. The final term, (which is at level 4) is mainly focussed on an individual major project that culminates in an exhibition of work.
You will progress from dependence to independence and learn to take responsibility for your own learning and development. You will be encouraged to take risks in art and design, appropriately guided and supervised by specialist staff.
The course is supported by a large range of visits to a variety of galleries and places of interest including: Ironbridge Open Air Museum of Steel Sculpture, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Museums, The New Art Gallery Walsall, City of Birmingham Art gallery, The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, Ashmoleum, Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museums in Oxford and London.
Students also take part in a week long residential visit to Dublin where the programme is involved in a joint project with the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
