BTEC National Diploma in
Media Production - Level 3

The BTEC National Diploma in Media Production is designed for those people who wish to work in the Media Industries.The course will allow you to build skills as well as technical knowledge.The course gives a broad base of understanding whilst allowing you to focus on specialist areas of interest. BTEC Nationals are valued highly by employers and the higher education sector (University and Colleges) and provide an excellent foundation for entry onto Foundation and Undergraduate Degrees.

Entry Requirements

You will need to hold the equivalent of a UK level 2 qualification and have an interest, or experience in the Media industry. The College will assess your qualifications and tell you whether you are eligible to join the course. You will need to complete the application and write 250 words on the back page of the form explaining why you want to undertaken your chosen course.

Course Content

The Media production 2 year course offers a vocational qualification for students interested in becoming part of this fast moving, ever changing and exciting industry.The course is designed to offer a broad base of skills relevant to the needs of employers.You will be introduced to a wide range of media skills and have the opportunity to gain work experience.

Modules include:

You will need to apply for one of the following three pathways offered; these being Television and Film, Journalism or Games Development.

Television and Film option (Moving Image):

Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in:

You will learn the required production skills from developing and researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. You will also develop skills in animation and the new media. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media.You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.

Journalism option:

Working as part of a team, the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in:

You will learn the required production skills from developing and researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. You will also develop skills in radio production and new media. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media.You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills
required for a successful career.

Games Development option:

Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to develop your skills and understanding of gaming, one of the fastest growing media industries. You will have the opportunity to create and develop your own games as well as acquire skills in 3D animation, digital graphics and narrative image making.You will gain practical production experience in:

You will take part in location shoots and educational visits along with career research and receive visits from guest speakers from the creative industries.

How will I be assessed?

You will work on assignments and practical exercises which will take the form of simulated and real work situations.These will develop and test your ability to solve problems on your own and also by working in a team. A short period of work experience may also be included as part of your course.

What can I do next?

The National Diploma will support you in applying for jobs and pursuing a career in the media industry. Upon the successful completion of the two year National Diploma, you will be able to progress onto a Foundation Degree or Undergraduate degree in Media or most of the related subjects described in the course content.

Many of our students have successfully progressed to study media at universities such as Nottingham, Birmingham, Plymouth, Sunderland, Blackpool and Southampton.

Additional costs

You will need to purchase course materials such as: computer disks/flash drives, audio tapes/CDs, and video tapes at an approximate cost of £250 across the duration of the two years of the course.
