City of Wolverhampton College is celebrating after receiving a top award for its commitment to staff training and development.

The college has been awarded the Investors in People Gold standard, joining the top 3% of accredited organisations across the UK that have been recognised for outstanding practice in developing excellence.

Assessors spent two days meeting with more than 50 college staff to ensure it is meeting set criteria in areas such as learning and development, leadership skills and recognition and rewards of staff.

Commenting on the award, Mark Robertson, principal of the college, said: “This is a truly fantastic achievement for all of us. Very few colleges achieve such a high accolade and it recognises the tremendous hard work put in by everyone here to make the college a great place to learn and to work.

“The assessor said he believed we were now one of the very best colleges in the country and that he was hugely impressed with every single person he met during his time with us.

“The Investors in People Gold award caps a wonderful year for the college which, in just the last 12 months, has been rated by Ofsted as good with outstanding features and confirmed as being in the top 15% in the country for results for 16-18 year olds.”

Karen O’Reilly, human resources director at the college, added: “The Gold standard is a very challenging one to meet, with a set of more than 150 standards to comply with. I am delighted that the college achieved such a prestigious award – and did so with flying colours!”

Paul Devoy, head of Investors in People, said: “We’d like to congratulate City of Wolverhampton College on its Gold standard. Such a high level of accreditation is the sign of great people management practice and demonstrates a commitment to staff development and shows an organisation committed to being the very best it can be. The college should be extremely proud of its achievement.”
