ENGINEERING APPRENTICES SHOW METTLE IN WELDING COMPETITION
Bright sparks from City of Wolverhampton College will be aiming for success when they compete in the finals of a national welding competition next month.
A team of four engineering apprentices who are studying for Level 2 and 3 qualifications in manufacturing and fabrication and welding at the college’s Paget Road campus will be competing in Weld-Off 2016 in Tamworth on May 11.
The competition – run by Morris Site Machinery – aims to identify top talent among young welders aged 16-26 and will require participants to demonstrate their technical skills to by producing a welded piece of metalwork on the theme of God Save the Queen, in honour of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.
The team members – Daniel Morton, aged 21, Riley Bridgewater, 18, and Joe Philpott, 17, who all work for Moog Aircraft Group in Fordhouses, and Kenan Wilks, 17, who is employed by Radshape in Birmingham – will be creating a working scale model of Tower Bridge, and will also have to show their industry knowledge in a safety round and question and answer session with judges.
Neil Davies, curriculum manager for engineering at the college, said: “We are delighted that the team has made it through to the finals of the competition and are confident that they will use the individual technical and team working skills they have learnt on their courses to complete the brief and impress the judging panel.”
Phil Winnington, managing director from Morris Site Machinery, added: “Weld Off is all about promoting young people to get ahead in the UK welding industry and encouraging them to enhance their skills and knowledge and we were thrilled with the calibre of responses received from a record number of entries this year.”
The final will be held at the at the Speedy National Distribution Centre in Tamworth and the college’s apprentices will be competing against teams from New College Durham, Training 2000 in Blackburn and Welsh colleges NPTC Group and Coleg Cambria.
