Love is in the air at college

Love was in the air at City of Wolverhampton College recently when two students on the same course tied the knot.

Gareth Morris, aged 35, and Kiran Akhtar, 22, who are both studying towards their Foundation Degree in Broadcast Journalism at the Paget Road Campus, married on December 23 at Wolverhampton Registry Office.

The newly weds, who met three years ago when they were both studying creative media, are the only husband and wife duo the course has ever had.

Lecturer Peter Cole said: “Gareth and Kiran really are a double act. When they first started the course I tried to pair them off with different people for assignments but that didn’t last long! They support each other with their class work really well and it was lovely to see them return after Christmas as husband and wife.”

Gareth, who proposed to Kiran in Bella Italia, said: “We are quite the team and that spills over into the class room. We help each other out with assignments and drive each other forward. I left school with no GCSEs so Kiran will help me with my grammar, while I’m more journalistically minded so I will help Kiran find stories.”

However, after three years or studying together, the pair are preparing to see a little bit less of each other. After graduating this Summer Gareth hopes to move on to a degree in Photo Journalism, while Kiran is looking forward to embarking on her career in care.

Gareth added: “We have been together side by side for so long it will be very strange to not have her whispering in my ear and encouraging me.”
