NURSERIES URGED TO PREPARE FOR FREE CHILDCARE CHANGES

City of Wolverhampton College is urging local nurseries to prepare for new government childcare proposals that could affect them.

From September, three- and four-year-olds in England will be entitled to 30 free hours of childcare per week in term time – up from the current 15 hours.

The college is now offering free support and advice for nurseries needing to recruit extra staff members to create the extra capacity needed to deliver double the amount of free childcare via its apprenticeship service.

Deputy Director of Commercial and Employment Andrew Cartwright said: “With the free 30 hours on the horizon it’s vital that early years providers start to plan their workforce strategy and employ enough staff to meet demand. However, many nurseries have said they cannot afford to provide the extra hours without additional funding or that they do not have the qualified staff to cope – and that’s where our apprenticeship programme can help.

“Apprentices are a great way to attract new talent, save on recruitment and training costs, and provide additional support in a way that can improve outcomes for young children. Our years of experience mean we can help make the whole process of recruiting an apprentice simple and easy, from advertising the position to shortlisting candidates and providing admin support.”
