STUDENTS SPRUCE UP WOMEN’S REFUGE

29th November 2017

Accommodation for women affected by domestic violence is being given a spruce-up by construction students at City of Wolverhampton College this week.

A group of 18 students who are doing qualifications in painting and decorating, plumbing, carpentry and electrical, will be spending three days doing maintenance work at a refuge in the city run by The Haven, a charity that supports women and children who are vulnerable to domestic violence, homelessness and abuse

The team will be re-painting walls, putting up shelves and carrying out other ‘odd-jobs’ at the premises as part of the city-wide Orange Wolverhampton campaign, linked to the United Nations’ international 16 days of action to end violence against women and girls (25 November – 10 December).

Joel Dalhouse, curriculum manager for construction at the college, said: “The construction industry is a traditionally male dominated environment and by participating in this campaign we want to show that we are firmly against domestic violence.

“Carrying out the work in the refuge will make improvements that will benefit the women and children who live there, as well as give our students the chance to put the skills they are learning on their courses to good use.”

Marta Rios, volunteer engagement lead at The Haven, added: “It has been a wonderful initiative to help young people gain an insight into the reality of domestic violence and make a positive impact in their community by putting their skills into practice.

“The students have been absolutely fantastic and we are extremely grateful to everyone involved – it is thanks to the support of organisations like these that we can continue running vital services for women and children and make the stay in our hostels much easier.

The students worked on the project alongside staff from Wolverhampton Homes and Bouygues, which also provided the materials required for the work.
