Trainee hairdressers shine in national competition

Trainee hairdressers at City of Wolverhampton College have shown they have got bright careers ahead after triumphing in a national hairdressing competition.

Jusdeep Singh, aged 18 and Alia Mughal, 28, – who are both in the first year of their hairdressing qualification – won first and third place respectively in the education year one category of the annual Francesco Group Photographic Awards.

To be in with a chance of winning the students had to submit a photograph of a style they had created, with Jusdeep impressing the judges with her elegant braided plait and curls style (shown, left) which they classed as “a fab overall image with on-trend styling and a neat overall finish that was really well executed.”

Jusdeep said: “It was really exciting taking part in the competition but I never expected to win as the standard was so high – when they called my name out I couldn’t believe it!”

Alia, who created a dramatic fishtail plait for her entry, added: “The awards evening was amazing and winning a prize has really inspired me to go on and achieve more in my future career.”

The students are studying for a Level 1 diploma in hair and beauty at the college’s Metro One campus and will both be progressing to the Level 2 qualification in September.

The annual photographic competition is open to all of the Francesco Group’s college partners enabling students to compete against each other in three year groups. The awards ceremony took place at the Town Hall, Birmingham on Sunday, June 7.
