Staff and pupils turned out in force to acknowledge the success of 30 students in the Student of the Year 2008-09 awards evening, which was held in the new Construction Innovation Centre at the Wellington Road campus.

Around 180 people gathered to watch the students - many of whom had to overcome significant barriers to learning - pick up their trophies from former student and presenter of the Gadget Show Suzi Perry.

The most prestigious award of the night – the Graham Award – went to sports student Danielle Reade, who overcame major surgery while in the middle of her studies to achieve the highest grade ever achieved by the college for her qualification.

Other award winners included Hannah Hall, who picked up the West Midlands Police Award for Positive Citizenship, and Tashalee Richards, who was presented with the International Student Award.

Principal and Chief Executive Ian Millard said: “ The event was about putting Further Education in the spotlight, and celebrating the tremendous achievements of our students, many of whom are moving on to university or are making their first steps on the career ladder.

“I would like to congratulate our award winners and their families and hope they are as proud of their achievements as we are. These award winners are important role models and a true inspiration to their peers, parents and the entire city.”
