Beauty Student Nails it at National Competition

A talented student from City of Wolverhampton College has nailed it after being named among the top manicurists in the country.

Katrina Baker was awarded second place in the World Skills UK Advanced Nail Art competition, which was held in Derby in June.

As part of the competition the 20-year-old was up against the clock to complete a nail design on ten nails following the theme of “Carnival,” with the finished look incorporating hair, costume and make up.

Katrina, who hopes to pursue a career in theatre make up, chose an Egyptian Gothic theme for her nails, and had just two and a half hours to complete her look.

She said: “I didn’t expect to do so well and achieving silver has given me a lot more confidence in my work.”

The trainee beauty therapist now has the chance to progress and hopefully go on to represent the UK at World Skills 2011 in London.

College Principal Ian Millard said: “This competition will stand Katrina in good stead when she goes out into industry and demonstrates to future employers that she has the talent and the confidence to cope under pressure and achieve.”

School Leader for Hair and Beauty Catherine Hallam said: ““This is the first time we have entered this competition, and we our delighted with our students’ success.

“Not only has one of our students achieved at a national level but three of our beauty therapists were awarded medals in the regional heats of the competition.”

World Skills UK is a skills competition designed by leading industry experts to help raise the standards of training and performance at work while encouraging young people across the country to excel in their skill area.
