Industrial Leaders of the Future
Young people in Shropshire are learning how to become the industrial leaders of the future, thanks to a new scheme being run at the Polymer Training and Innovation Centre (PTIC).
The training centre, in Telford, is helping youngsters into employment through a new “Pathways to Apprenticeships” project in conjunction with City of Wolverhampton College.
A total of six delegates aged between 17 and 20 are currently on the scheme, which aims to give them the basic skills and knowledge required to go on to complete a full Apprenticeship.
The group acquire skills and qualifications that they were unable to secure through the usual education system. They gain key skills in Literacy and Numeracy through the college while also working towards their NVQ level 1 in Machine-based Polymer Processing Operations with PTIC.
The NVQ incorporates theoretical tuition and practical activity related to plastics waste management, thermoforming and quality control.
They are also able to enhance their skills by obtaining a forklift truck driving licence.
Charmaine Bowers, PTIC’s Operations Manager, said “We want to give these young adults a better chance to gain permanent employment at the end of the scheme. One of last year’s successful candidates went on to gain a full apprenticeship at Epson in Telford.”
