Apprenticeships with Added Value
An enhanced Apprenticeship scheme, designed to ensure that polymer companies have a workforce with the skills they need to ensure long term prosperity, has just been launched by City of Wolverhampton College.
The standard Polymer based Apprenticeship requires students to obtain an NVQ Level 2 in a Polymer Processing discipline together with key skills in literacy and numeracy. The new Apprenticeship+ programme combines this requirement with additional engineering skill and knowledge modules which are optional and can be chosen to meet individual employer requirements.
Candidates who enrolled with the Polymer Training & Innovation Centre (PTIC), a business unit of City of Wolverhampton College, can be fully funded to obtain an NVQ Level 2 in Polymer Processing, an NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and/or a BTEC National Certificate in Engineering along with their Key Skills.
PTIC Operations Manager Charmaine Bowers said: “We designed this Apprenticeship+ programme following consultation with employers who wanted staff to have not only polymer expertise but also a good foundation of engineering knowledge and skills.”
“The engineering aspects of the new scheme, which are delivered using day release studies include: machining skills; machine tools; computer aided design (CAD) and measurement or a theory based technical certificate.
“The polymer aspects of the new scheme include free-of-charge attendance on a four-day plastics processing course at PTIC, which is followed by in-company assessment and mentoring.
“Overall the new qualification is a win - win for both the employer and the employee and is already proving to be very popular.”
