College Journalism Course is the Best!

L-R Sue Green, Kim FletcherA journalism course run by City of Wolverhampton College has been announced as one of the most successful journalism courses in the country by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

The college was awarded the best performing NCTJ Academic Year FE course in the UK at a gala dinner held at Belfast City Hall.

It was among five top performing NCTJ accredited centres across the country  presented with awards for the highest percentage of students achieving C grade passes or better in all seven NCTJ exams including 100wpm shorthand.

Programme Tutor Sue Green, who was presented with the award by Kim Fletcher, Chairman of the National Council for the Training of Journalists, said:  “It’s brilliant. We always work to extremely high standards at City of Wolverhampton College to achieve the excellent results demanded by the professional awarding body and the newspaper industry.”

The other four top performing  centres were Nottingham Trent University topping the post graduate results table with the MA in Newspaper Journalism,  the University of Kent which topped the undergraduate category, the best performing commercial fast-track course was Press Association’s Newcastle-based Multimedia Journalism Course and Highbury College topped the table for FE fast-track courses.

Joanne Butcher, NCTJ Chief Executive, said: “All our accredited course providers should be congratulated on achieving the high standards the industry looks for.

“At a time when resources are under pressure it is a challenge to maintain standards. NCTJ qualifications remain one of this country’s toughest tests of professional skills. They require huge amounts of skill, ability, persistence and determination – the very qualities editors want in their newsroom trainees.”

The college has been accredited by the NCTJ since 1997 and is now the only accredited FE journalism training centre in the Midlands.
