Students Honoured for Achievements

Mark Mudie with Student of the Year award winner Sulita DeviExceptional students, many of whom had to overcome great obstacles on their path to success, have been recognised for their achievements at a glittering awards ceremony.

City of Wolverhampton College hosted its Student of the Year Awards 2010/11 on Friday December 16 at its Construction Innovation Centre, Wellington Road Campus.

A total of 25 outstanding students were presented with trophies by guest speaker ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Matt Murray in recognition of their hard work, determination and commitment to learning.

The most prestigious award of the night – the Graham Award – was presented to Sulita Devi, a single mom with three children, who returned to education in order to overcome her dyslexia, improve her skills and forge a career as a probation officer.

Other award winners included Daniel Nicholls, who received the West Midlands Police Award for Positive Citizenship and Soraya Pinnock who picked up the Jim Parker Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community.

Principal Ian Millard said: “Every year when I come to read the nominations, I do not think it is possible that the students can be as good as last year. But this year, once again, these students have surpassed my expectations; they are all inspirational and remarkable.

“In these tough economic times it is heartening to see that our students have not let this get in their way; in fact it has made them all the more determined to succeed in their chosen courses. Whether this is overcoming a disability or not having the best start in life, or just a real commitment to do well, all our students are already winners. They should all be very proud of what they have achieved.”
