Wolverhampton Restauranteur named Employer of the Year

Alex Abdel-Aal is presented with his award by David Swingwood, Vice Chair of the Board of Governors.A Wolverhampton restauranteur is celebrating after being named Employer of the Year at a glittering awards ceremony.

Alex Abdel-Aal, owner of Alex’s Restaurant and Cafe Bar in Compton received the accolade at City of Wolverhampton College’s Student of the Year 2010-11 awards evening at the Wellington Road campus.

Alex, who opened his Mediterranean fusion restaurant three years ago with his partner Paula, was recognised for his commitment to staff training and the importance he places on staff development. 

Clare Gage, Account Manager for Employer Engagement at City of Wolverhampton College said: “From the start, Alex has been a strong supporter of the college’s Apprenticeship scheme by offering Hospitality Apprentices not only to existing staff but also to young people keen to begin a career in catering.

“Alex currently employs two Apprentices and has helped them to flourish in the kitchen by encouraging a hands-on approach from day one. Alex has encouraged his Apprentices to take pride in their work and talk to customers with passion about the dishes they have personally created.”

The Student of the Year awards were held at the college’s Construction Innovation Centre where around 200 staff and pupils gathered to acknowledge the success of 25 students. The guest speaker was ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Matt Murray.
