Hair & Beauty
Staff from City of Wolverhampton College visited Albania in October to teach female prisoners how to work in the Hair and Beauty industry.
Spa Centre Co-ordinator Ann Spencer and lecturer Isa Davies visited the capital Tirana to hold classes for inmates as young as 14-years-old.
The pair travelled to Eastern Europe to carry out research in the hope of establishing a hair and beauty academy there. The academy would enable to the college to offer qualifications to people more than 1,700 miles away.
Ann said: “The long-term vision is to bring opportunities to the city of Wolverhampton by setting up a hair and beauty academy in Tirana.”
Executive Director of the Albanian Prison Ministry Fred Westerink said: “Both Isa and Ann have been excellent ambassadors regarding professionalism and friendliness, and expressed a desire to improve not only our services but also the Tirana/Albanian training scene. It has really been a privilege working with both of them.”
The Hair and Beauty Salon is an initiative of the Albanian Prison Ministry organisation Sh.K.B.Sh. Through the salon, the Ministry provides training for incarcerated women in two Tirana prisons and professional training for former victims of sexual trafficking. They also aim to generate income so they are less reliant on foreign support.
