IT Centre Celebrates 10 Years
A training centre in Wolverhampton that has helped thousands of people switch on to IT is celebrating its 10th birthday this February.
The Chubb IT Learning Centre, based in the Chubb building in the city centre, has had more than 8,000 people pass through its doors since it opened in 2002.
To mark its 10th anniversary staff are holding a special birthday bash on February 1, where they will be joined by the Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Bert Turner and Mayoress Mrs Kath Turner and students both past and present.
Chubb IT Learning Centre Manager Rose Edwards said: “Over the last decade we have seen thousands of people study with us and improve their job prospects and IT skills.
“This event aims to recognise all those people who have gained their qualification through us - we are really looking forward to finding out what former students are doing now and how studying at the centre has helped them.”
Former students include Winsome Bonnie, who wanted to improve her computer skills so she could help her two children with their homework - little did she know it would result in a job! She enrolled on the iTQ course and after impressing staff was offered employment on the other side of the desk as an administrator.
She said: “I have now been working at the Chubb as an administrator for over a year and can’t believe I’ve come from knowing nothing about IT to advising others.”
Meanwhile eighty-three-year-old Hazel Wilkes is proving it’s never too late to learn after enrolling on a computing course.
She said: “The centre is the place to come for both people who want qualifications for a job and also older people because it’s a means of understanding what a computer can do. It’s a great pleasure to know what my family are talking about when it comes to IT!”
The Chubb IT learning Centre offers a range of computing courses from those for complete novices to Level 3 qualifications. The centre is open 60 hours a week and learners work at their own pace, using workbooks, with tutors on hand to assist when needed. The workbooks are backed up by workshops and assignments. The centre has proved a real hit with learners, with up to 450 students on the books at any one time, and around 8 achieving their ITQ each week.
