What is Personal Best?
The Personal Best Programme enables you to work towards an NVQ Level 1 qualification in Event Volunteering, studying topics such as first aid, customer service and public safety awareness. As part fo the 14 week programme you will also receive ongoing support and guidance from a team of advisers to improve your interview technique and enhance your chances of getting a job. Participants will also be offered an interview to become a volunteer at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The college is also offering a Healthy Lifestyle course, giving students the chance to live a healthier lifestyle. The course, which is run one a day week for 6 weeks, includes a range of healthy lifestyle opportunities including an individual health and fitness assessment and personal fitness plan plus a free three month membership to the college fitness centre.
Meanwhile our Improving Personal Fitness course is an opportunity to undertake an accredited course leading to a Community Sports Leaders award. This course also runs one day per week over six weeks and involves portfolio building, a health and fitness assessment, including follow up advice and support and a work based placement.



Diane has been a full time mum for the best part of 30 years. When dropping off her children at school she met he local Personal Best Adviser, who encouraged her to join the programme.Once Diane was on the course she really enjoyed it. It opened her mind to learning again and she didn't want it to end. She made new friends on the on the course and found the teaching excellent. Since completing the course Diane, with the help of her Adviser, has gone on to do the ECDL ICT course and secured a part-time admin job.
Unemployed, homeless for five years and suffering from alcohol abuse, Stephen thought he was destined to live his life on the streets. On the Personal Best course he learnt about Public Safety Awareness, how to work within a team, interpersonal skills and and what it would be like to become a volunteer at London 2012. "It help me my motivation", Stephen says, "I would definitely recommend this course to anyone. Personal Best has helped me become more assertive and built up my confidence. It's great as a springboard for getting back into further training or employment".
Recent Personal Best graduate, David Holmes-White, is now well on his way to his dream job as a football coach. David joined the 6 week programme with a particular aim; he wanted to become a football coach. During the programme he threw himself into volunteer work with great enthusiam gaining valuable experience in catering, retail, stewarding and event promotion. "I think it's a great way to gear you up for work, because it gets you into a routien before you actually start work and you get used to deadlines".
