BASKETBALL ACADEMY
Our Basketball Academy has been running for over six years, and has been successful in providing selected students with the opportunity to progress onto playing their selected sport at a higher level.
The Academy provides participants with the opportunity to:
- Develop the physical and technical performance of individuals.
- Access specialist coaching from a fully qualified 'national governing body of sport' coach.
- Represent the Academy competitively at local, regional and national competitions.
- Combine education and sport to facilitate the pursuit of excellence for aspiring young sports participants.
This will be achieved by providing high quality coaching enhanced by other essential components such as dieting advice and sports psychology. Academy participants will also be supported by the provision of fitness and sports therapy facilities.
However, to ensure success in both academic and sporting goals, Academy participants must give their complete commitment and effort in combining their full-time course of study with upto 8 hours additional coaching/playing. Effective time management is therefore essential and our Academy coaches will liase constantly with academic tutors to ensure this takes place.
Academy training will take place on a Monday and Friday from 8:30am - 10:30am.
You will need to ensure that you are available for both training sessions and any match commitments that will take place on a Wednesday afternoon. It is crucial that you ensure that these times will not clash with your college timetable prior to the commencment of your course.
Trials for the Basketball Academy will take place throughout the spring and summer term. To secure your place at the trials, please complete and submit the City of Wolverhampton College Academy application form.
Training sessions will be both delivered and supervised by experienced FA qualified staff who are trained to a minimum UEFA B standard.
Emphasis will be placed on player development and fitness, which is designed to positively impact players' technical development and match day performance.
Within the last few years, the Team Wolverhampton Basketball Academy (TWBA) programme has been very successful in entering a team to play in a number of basketball leagues and has had the following successes:
- Winning the Birmingham City Basketball Leagues for the second year running (without losing a game).
- Winning the British College Basketball Tournament.
- Runners up in the Birmingham under 19 schools league.
- Cup Finalists West Midlands College League.
The academic element of the programme is a central feature and is a compulsory part of the Basketball Academy offer.
