From work experience in the college’s Academy bakery to work experience in Florence, twenty-year-old Dionisie Vilcu has come a long way since moving to the UK from Moldova four years ago.

Unable to speak any English he initially did an ESOL course before doing progressing to do functional skills qualifications in English and maths.

As part of the course he did a work experience placement in Academy bakery and liked it so much that he decided to learn more! He enrolled for the Level 2 diploma in professional bakery in 2015 and has just completed the Level 3 qualification – during which he got the chance to work in Florence for two weeks as part of the Easmus+ programme.

Dionisie, who used his bread making skills to make pizzas in the busy Boccanegra restaurant, said: “It’s a great opportunity to come to Italy and experience the culture as well as learn some traditional skills.”
