Professional cookery student Tom Jackson
Working alongside chefs in a pub kitchen sparked 29-year-old Tom Jackson’s interest in catering and, after finding out about courses on offer at an open day, he enrolled for the Level 2 diploma in professional cookery.
“When I started looking for jobs in the industry I realised that employers are more interested in qualifications than experience these days, so I decided to come to college to improve my chances of getting a job in the future.
“I thought studying would be more difficult now as I’m older but it’s been fine and I’ve turned out to be much better at it than I thought I would be!
“Everything we learn is relevant to the industry and working in the training kitchen feels like being in a real job rather than a classroom. When customers say they’ve enjoyed dishes I’ve prepared it makes me realise that this is what I was meant to do!”
Having completed the Level 2 course, Tom has now enrolled for the Level 3 diploma.
