College engineering apprentice Jack Thomas

Enrolling on an engineering course at the college has given 18-year-old Jack Thomas’s future career a kick-start after he was offered an apprenticeship in the college’s own engineering department.

Jack, who works as a member of staff in the department four days a week and spends one day continuing to study for the Level 3 diploma in mechanical engineering, said: “I originally stopped on at my school’s 6th form but I wasn’t able to study engineering on its own and ended up studying another subject that I wasn’t interested in, so I decided to start again and enrol at college instead.

“College is a lot better than school as the facilities are better, the tutors really push you and, as an apprentice, I’m learning ‘on-the-job’ as well as working towards a recognised qualification a the same time – I feel really good being a member of college staff and working with such experienced tutors – it’s brilliant!”
