Engineering Apprentice Joshua Hawkins
Joshua Hawkins, a fabrication and welding apprentice at City of Wolverhampton College, is learning a traditional trade craft that has helped maintain England’s waterways for centuries.
The 17-year-old, who is making timber lock gates for the Canal and River Trust, said: “I love metalwork and enjoy working with my hands and putting things together.
“I’m loving my apprenticeship. Every day is something new and I’m getting so much on the job experience. I go into college twice a week and everything I study there is required at work so it all fits together.
“I have told friends to get apprenticeships because I think you can get experience early on in life and get into work at a young age.
“I take a lot of pride in my work and it’s nice knowing that my work can be seen on canals all over the country.”
