Engineering apprentice Matt Plant
As part of the HNC in mechanical engineering, 18-year-old Matt Plant got the chance to put his skills to the test in the finals of the manufacturing team challenge at the prestigious WorldSkills UK competition and walked away with a bronze medal.
Matt, who is an apprentice at Moog Aircraft Group – Wolverhampton Operations and studies at college one day a week, said: “Taking part in the competition was a great opportunity and really tested our skills as we had to work as a team, think on our feet, focus on the task required and not be put off by working in a pressured environment – all skills that can be transferred to the workplace.”
Commenting on the HNC course, Matt added: “I’m already benefitting from the skills I’m learning, particularly the maths and CAD units. Colleagues welcome my input in discussions as they know I’m learning the latest techniques and, as a result, my reputation and confidence at work has increased.”
Matt and his fellow students will now undergo a further 18 months of intensive training and work towards being selected for the national squad to represent the UK in the world finals of the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi in 2017.
