Engineering apprentice Joel Wilks
Nineteen-year-old Joel Wilks is earning and learning on an engineering apprenticeship which allows him to study for qualifications at college and get practical experience in the workplace at the same time.
Joel works for Radshape Sheet Metal Ltd in Birmingham and attends college one-day-a-week to study for a Level 3 qualification in Fabrication and Welding – and the skills he has learnt have put him in line for selection for a national squad to represent the UK in the world finals of the WorldSkills competition in Brazil in 2015.
Joel said: “An apprenticeship is a great way of getting work experience and qualifications at the same time and the skills I learn at college help me back at work and I feel confident that I can complete tasks to the same standard as people who have been working for the company for a long time.
“I was really pleased when I found out I’d been picked for the national squad selection –it’s a great achievement and will look great on my CV – I’m really proud of myself!”
