Engineering apprentice Tom Timmins
Nineteen-year-old Tom Timmins has always been interested in engineering and wanted to do an apprenticeship so that he could gain skills, get a qualification and be paid at the same time!
Tom combines working for UTC Aerospace Systems Marston UK in Fordhouses with studying for a Level 3 qualification in Fabrication and Welding at the college’s Paget Road campus one day a week, and in November represented the college in the finals of the sheet metalwork category in the national WorldSkills UK competition.
Tom said: “Taking part in the WorldSkills UK competition was a great experience. I had to make a table top barbeque from scratch in a set time amount of time which really tested my engineering skills and I was really pleased with the end result.
“I’ve now been put forward for selection for the national squad which is a a great opportunity and the extra training I’ll get over the next few months will really hone my skills and help me to perform to the best of my ability.
“I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone – if you know what you want to do as a career it’s a great way of getting work experience, learning new skills and gaining qualifications at the same time.”
