Food and Beverage Service student Will Thomas
Getting a job at a Frankie and Benny’s restaurant whilst at school led 18-year-old Will Thomas to enrol for the Level 2 diploma in food and beverage service.
Will said: “I’d gained lots of on-the-job experience but I wanted to gain a qualification and learn more about front of house roles in the industry such as silver service and running a bar, as well as different types of food.”
As part of the course Will got the chance to spend two weeks in Florence working as a waiter in the popular Bistrot Culinaria, organised through the Erasmus+ programme.
He added: “Italy is known for its good customer service and even though the restaurant I was working in was quite casual the customers were still served in a formal way. As well as learning a range of different serving techniques I also learnt how to explain the menu to customers and how to promote certain dishes, as well as how to use a traditional espresso machine.
“Working in Italy was a great opportunity and something that not many people have the chance to do.”
