Former A Level student Grace Wylde

Thanks to the support she received at college, former A Level student Grace Wylde was able to overcome challenging family circumstances to gain the grades she needed to move on to a degree.

The 20-year-old, who is currently studying Social Work at Birmingham City University, said: “During my first year at college I started fostering my little sister and I had no childcare or a clue how to manage studying and being a parent. The tutors and staff from Student Services helped me arrange funding and a placement at a nursery for my sister. They also helped me with the personal issues of raising a child and supported me amazingly through my course and exams.

“My experience at college was like being part of a family – the support was always there no matter what the issue and I just felt so comfortable being myself there. Me and my friend even wore slippers during exam season so we could relax whilst revising!

“I’ll be honest, if it wasn’t for the staff there I wouldn’t have got into university. They supported me academically and emotionally throughout my time at college.”
