Former Apprentice Danny Phillips

Apprentice Daniel Phillips

Twenty-two-year-old Danny Phillips found that his lack of work experience was holding him back when applying for jobs, so embarked on an apprenticeship to give him the skills he needed. And after completing his Community Arts apprenticeship he was delighted to be offered an exciting role as Community, Projects and Events Officer, with responsibility for organising community events.

He said: “I had been working in a supermarket for four years and one day woke up and decided to take the plunge and start applying for jobs. I did well getting interviews but I had the same feedback from everyone that I didn’t have enough experience.

“I came across an apprenticeship opportunity working in the events team with Telford & Wrekin Council and thought it would be a good opportunity. I had been to college so for me it was more about getting experience of the real working world and finding out what a job would involve.

“Highlights of my apprenticeship included organizing a family friendly event bringing thousands of people into Telford Town Park, working backstage at a music event and climbing a tree dressed as an elf – it was a great feeling of achievement seeing everyone enjoying what you have created after weeks of hard work.

“My apprenticeship gave me the qualification and skills to do the job but probably more importantly it gave me the confidence, self believe and contacts to secure the job I have today.”
